The armadillos are terrestrial to fossorial, have forepaws and claws designed for digging, and have a carapace over much of their body, which protects them when they roll into a ball when threatened. They feed primarily upon insects and larvae, but may eat carrion, small vertebrates, eggs, berries and other plant material.
