For
those who desire to understand how manatee brains
are constructed, we present below an array of fiber-stained coronal
brain sections through the entire brain of specimen # 85-32. These cross sections are stained
for myelin sheaths and therefore reveal the major
fiber tracts of the brain. Myelin stains dark purple
(hematoxylin stain), and the cellular masses which
the fiber tracts interconnect are highlighted as lighter
grey regions. The sections are arranged from the front
of the brain at the top left through the back of the
brain at bottom right. The successive sections are
"read" as one reads the text of a book.
