Simple Linear List

List of Specimens

The sequentially arranged brain specimens listed below are grouped by taxonomic level. Under each order, the specimens are listed by common name (with Genus and Species in parentheses). Groups of related species listed are arranged sequentially by Family.

We are presently in the process of updating the entire mammalian taxonomy and geographic distribution of our websites using the following reference:
Mammal Species of the World, A Taxonomic and Geographic Reference, Third Edition, Volume 1 and 2, Edited by Don E. Wilson and DeeAnn M. Reeder, The Johns Hopkins University Press, Baltimore, 2005.

When completed, the brain specimens in the List, will contain information and images for every whole brain in the collections, each of which has been serially sectioned, stained and mounted on glass slides. In most cases even-numbered sections are stained for cell bodies (Nissl method), and odd-numbered sections are stained for myelinated fibers (variations on the Weigert method) (see methods and procedures).

The first specimen that was obtained of each species was usually sectioned in the coronal plane. And for additional specimens, at least one was sectioned in the sagittal plane and one in the horizontal plane. Most specimens include a standard set of photographs of the perfused whole brain, as well as sets of brain and body measures.
